Drugs to Avoid If Your Doberman is vWD Affected

The following drugs can cause a bleeding crisis for dogs that are vWD affected :

  1. Aspirin

  2. Antihistamines (Benadryl, etc.)

  3. Phenylbutazone

  4. Sulfa-based antibiotics

  5. Ibuprofen (Motrin)

  6. Estrogens

  7. Ampicillin/Amoxicillin

  8. Penicillin

  9. Phenothiazine tranquilizers

  10. Heparin

  11. Theophylline

  12. Warfarin (Coumadin)

  13. MSM

Emotional stress in humans can precipitate bleeding and there could also be a similar association in dogs.

NOTE:

  • All sulfa-based drugs have similar properties to Aspirin.  (Usually if one is allergic to Sulfa, one is also allergic to Aspirin and vice-versa).

  • Ibuprofen is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), therefore it is best      to stay clear of ALL NSAID drugs.

  • Heparin, Warfarin, Coumadin are blood thinners (as is Aspirin).

  • MSM has the same properties as Aspirin whereby it acts as a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and as well will thin the blood.
